The Kentucky Derby is a Grade 1 stakes race for three-year old Thoroughbreds held annually at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May. The race is one and a quarter miles and is known around the world as “The Greatest Two Minutes In Sports.” It is also called “The Run for the Roses” for the blanket of roses draped over the winner. It is the oldest continuously held sporting event in North America boasting over 150,000 in attendees from around the world.
The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the Triple Crown and is followed by the Preakness Stakes, then the Belmont Stakes. A horse must win all three races to win the Triple Crown. Unlike the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, the Kentucky Derby has been run every consecutive year since 1875 and attendance ranks first in North America surpassing attendance of all other stakes races.
The Leadership Summit attendees will be attending the 141st Running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 2, 2015. http://www.kentuckyderby.com/
Churchill Downs officially opened in 1875 and is a Thoroughbred racetrack most famous for hosting the Kentucky Derby. In 1875 Churchill Downs hosted the first Kentucky Derby and the first Kentucky Oaks. Churchill Downs has also hosted the renowned Breeder’s Cup on eight occasions, most recently in 2011.
Churchill Downs is one of the most historic sports and entertainment venues in the United States with live racing in April, May, June, July and November. Attendance at Churchill Downs continuously records the highest totals in North American thoroughbred racing.
In 2009, the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks drew more than 250,00 fans. The Kentucky Derby annually races at “sell-out” capacity.
In addition to the Kentucky Derby a number of traditions play a large role in the atmosphere. The Mint Julep is an iced drink consisting of bourbon, mint and sugar syrup. It is the traditional beverage of the race. The historic drink can be served in an ice-frosted silver julep cup, however, most Churchill Downs patrons sip from souvenir glasses (first offered in 1939 and are available in revised form each year) printed with all previous Derby winners. Also, burgoo, a thick stew of beef, chicken, pork and vegetables, is a popular Kentucky dish server at Derby.
The Kentucky Oaks known as “Lilies for the Fillies” is held annually on Friday before the Kentucky Derby. The phrase “Lilies for the Fillies” is a representation of the official flower of the Oaks, the stargazer lily. The majestic flower was chosen to represent the race of the ladies for its femininity and strength, the traits that represent a strong, classy Southern lady. Its bright pink color has also been made a fashion statement and brand for the Oaks. Oaks Day is all about the ladies, including a “PINK OUT!” so wear something that has pink in it.
The Kentucky Derby is a place of high fashion. Arguably more important than your whole outfit, is what you top it off with – your Derby hat. Your choice of hat should be the centerpiece of your outfit, whether it be sleek and modern or fancy and feminine. Historically, the bigger and bolder, the better. When it comes to hats for men, don’t try to outshine the women. Go for a straw boater or white Panama dress hat that accentuates your suit’s style.

It was very well executed and I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with the vendors and my peers at the Kentucky Derby. I can’t wait to attend next year!”
"I met some great owners and connections that will last a lifetime. It’s rare when you get together with someone and immediately have so much in common and respect for one another. I thank the Club Solutions team for the opportunity to grow and learn from my peers."

“I think we all get bombarded with different opportunities and one must be selective in what to say ‘yes’ to and what to say ‘no’ to. I am so glad I said ‘yes’ to this. Shawn, Rico and the Club Solutions crew were awesome hosts, the Derby was an incredible experience, but most of all it was the connections and the great thoughts that came from the roundtable discussions as well as the ‘offline’ discussions. This was more than ‘brain storming.’ This was real, relevant and it advanced my ability to compete and profit.”
"The topics of conversation and the presenter were perfect. Connecting with the vendors was a very positive experience. And meeting with all of my peers both formally and informally allowed us all to leave Louisville with new knowledge and new friendships."
"The Club Solutions Leadership Summit was an amazing experience! I truly enjoyed spending quality time with the industry’s best owners and operators. The takeaway for me was the industry’s best are focused on continuous improvement."
“Industry leaders learning from each other, the fun and excitement of the Derby and great Bourbon. Now that’s an event you can’t miss.”
